Shirley A. Haney October 15,1936 to June 29, 2024
Born on October 15, 1936, to Irving and Florence in Chicago, Illinois (preceded in death), brother Philip (preceded in death), and Steve Thompson.
Shirley was married to Raymond Stein (preceded in death) for almost 25 years. They lived in Chicago surrounded by friends and family. They moved from Chicago to sunny southern California where they had two beautiful children, Philip Stein and Carrie Pollack. She was so proud to share with everyone that her son was a chef and her daughter was a nurse. They created a home full of warmth and happiness, where everyone was welcome. She “adopted” Brad Cantley whom she loved very much and considered him one of her kids.
Shirley was lucky enough to find love again and married William Haney (preceded in death). They were married for 26 years before he passed away. With that marriage she was blessed with four stepdaughters: Becky DeFibo (husband Tony), Sandra Tierman (husband Stan), Robin McClure (preceded in death), and Sherri Fowler (preceded in death).
Shirley worked as a construction secretary. She had no trouble working in the construction industry and forged many lifetime friendships over the years. She always had a bowl of candy on her desk, because candy could make even the toughest day a little better. This allowed her to share her beautiful smile with everyone that stopped by her desk.
Shirley and Bill loved to travel. They travelled throughout their marriage creating memories that they loved to share. They especially loved to cruise. A 28 day cruise just wasn’t long enough for them, but they couldn’t stand to be away from family longer then that. They cruised everywhere: Hawaii, Tahiti, Mediterranean, Baltic, Panama, Alaska, England, Ireland, and Scotland. This love of travel never deserted Shirley, and she continued to cruise on her own, or with her son and daughter even after his passing.
Shirley had two grandchildren, Riley and Katherine, whom she adored. She called them “my angels” and looked forward to sleepovers, going to breakfast, playing games, baking, cooking, going to their orchestra shows and dance shows, and just being a loving presence. We were truly blessed to have lived a mile apart making them so close.
Shirley loved to play Bingo every week, go to Las Vegas or Chumash and play slot machines, read her “trash magazines”, read books (especially Tom Clancy), bake, go on adventures, and visit with friends and family. She loved to drink a good Manhattan, with 2 cherries!
Shirley is not here in body but is here in spirit. She was truly one of the strongest women (survived cancer 5 times) most loving, and truly inspiring women anybody was lucky enough to meet.
