Sharon Rae Shimohara
September 8, 1947-March 6, 2021
Sharon Shimohara of Simi Valley, CA passed away as a result of complications from pneumonia on March 6, 2021. Born in Los Angeles to Scotty and Lois Burns, she graduated from Leuzinger High School and El Camino College and attended UCLA. She grew up in Lawndale, CA and lived in West Los Angeles, Rancho Palos Verdes and Simi Valley.
She married her high school sweetheart Stan Shimohara in 1969 and they had two sons, Matthew and Scott. Throughout her life, Sharon loved to teach. She taught ballet early in her life. Later in life she pursued her love of needlework and teaching through the Embroiders’ Guild of America, becoming a member of the Azure Verde Chapter in Palos Verdes and the Channel Islands Chapter in Ventura County, including serving as its President. She served as Director of Education for the national Embroiders’ Guild of America and became a certified embroidery competition judge. She also taught surface embroidery and studied Japanese embroidery.
She loved her family and enjoyed traveling. For their 50th anniversary, Sharon and Stan took a Panama Canal trip and had previously travelled to London and Rome to visit their son Matthew and his wife Jennie Wright. In the last 3 years of her life, she particularly enjoyed spending time with her grandson Henry.
She is survived by her husband Stan, her sister Barbara Jane Burns and nephew Christopher, her son Matthew and daughter-in-law Jennie, her son Scott and his fiancé Kim Shea and her grandson Henry and Kim’s daughters Alana and Zoey. She will also be missed by her sisters- and brothers-in-laws, Diana and Dennis Mitani, Lorraine and Pat Coyne, Ron and Terri Shimohara, Ellen Shimohara, and Arthur and Harriet Shimohara, and all of Sharon’s nieces and nephews and their children.
