Joseph Anthony Canestro of Simi Valley, CA, born May 13, 1922 in Portland Oregon, passed away on March 13, 2015 at the age of 92. He is survived by his beloved wife Beverly of 68 years, two daughters, Diane and Annette, and sons-in-law David, Greg and John. His son David and daughter Catherine preceded him in death. He is survived by 13 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren. Joseph was a genuinely devoted husband, uncle, father, grandfather and great grandfather and friend.
Joseph, a WWII Veteran, joined the National Guard at age 17. He was a decorated Master Sergeant in the 41st Infantry Division. His unit was the first to go overseas. He served in the Pacific theater, participated in seven D-Day landings and received the Silver Star for his service. After his military service, Joseph was employed by the Rexall Drug Company for 26 years. He began his career in Portland, Oregon as a warehouse laborer. He promoted to Branch Manager in Baltimore, Maryland then to Regional Branch Manager in the Los Angeles area. He and his wife Beverly owned The Party Shop in Sherman Oaks for four years. After selling the business, he was employed by Bernat Yarn Company as a Salesperson until he retired in 1994. He founded the Show Boat 7 Band in 1965 and loved to play his guitar at parties and social gatherings. He enjoyed dances at the Senior Center with his wife Beverly and their large circle of friends. Joseph had a deep passion for life, his family, friends and neighbors. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him and loved him.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on April 9th at St. John Eudes Catholic Church, 9901 Mason Ave. Chatsworth, CA 91311.
The Honor Guard will perform Veterans Honors in the Plaza immediately after Mass. The Celebration of Life reception will take place in Grill Hall.
