Sister Mary Paulynne was the daughter of Mr. Herman Tubick and Mrs. Helen Ortenburger Tubick, residents of Maywood, California. She had one sibling 13 years older than herself, Violet Tubick, who also entered religious life as a Daughter of St. Paul, Sister Mary Gabriella.

Sister Mary Paulynne had a very happy childhood attending St. Rose of Lima School in Maywood and St Matthias High School in Huntington Park, California, both staffed by Sisters of Notre Dame. Sister was an active youngster. She described herself as a “Tomboy.” She excelled in sports and got great joy out of athletic activities.

At St. Matthias High School Sr. Mary Paulynne was in the very first graduating class. She thoroughly enjoyed the pioneering spirit she and her classmates experienced. A number of her classmates from this first class have remained very good friends throughout life.

After graduation from high school Sister spent two years at East Los Angeles State University. During this time she began to question the direction of her life. After a significant spiritual retreat she made the decision to enter the Sisters of Notre Dame. Her parents were very supportive of her vocation, and although they had already given one daughter to God, they generously gave another.

Sister Mary Paulynne spent many years teaching and was a school administrator in elementary school and in her alma mater St. Matthias High School. She was organized, hard working and large hearted in her educational ministries. She had a great love for the poor and spent many years in inner city schools making sure disadvantaged children received an excellent education.

After many years of devoting herself to educating the youth of Los Angeles, Sister Mary Paulynne felt a call to volunteer to be a missionary in Uganda. She entered into this experience heart and soul and gave her best to the students of St. Julie School, Buseesa. At the same time she managed the financial books for the mission. After returning home from Uganda Sister enthusiastically gave mission appeals annually. Most recently in August of 2024 she gave mission talks in New York.

Returning from these recent talks in New York she noticed that her legs had swollen while on the flight home. After going to the doctor she discovered that she had blood clots, a sign of Pancreatic Cancer. For just over 4 months Sister Mary Paulynne cooperated with treatments to address her condition. Just two days before she died she began hospice. Her final days were peaceful as she was ready to return home to her God. Sister passed away on January 25th at Notre Dame Center, Thousand Oaks, surrounded by her loved ones. We thank God for the vibrant, life-giving person she was and for her many years of dedicated service to God’s mission as a Sister of Notre Dame.
