Eileen Grant, age 99, passed away on May 13, 2023, in Simi Valley, California. Born November 6, 1923, in El Dara, Illinois, she was the youngest of three children born to parents Wade and Lillian Fesler.
Graduating from high school in Barry, Illinois in 1940, Eileen was the salutatorian of her class, cheerleader and band member. After graduation, she moved to California, was accepted into nursing school in Coronado, California and received her Registered Nursing Degree from the Army Nurse Corps in 1945. During her nursing internship, she worked in Santa Barbara and Monterey hospitals taking care of World War II servicemen.
In 1947 she married Cecil Joe Grant, a U.S. Army Officer and World War II pilot. They moved to Hobbs, New Mexico, an oil boom town in southeastern New Mexico. Cecil worked for Continental Airlines, and Eileen worked as a Hospital Administrator and surgery nurse. In 1962 she moved to Glendale, California, where she continued her 43-year nursing career working in surgery at St. Joseph’s Hospital and later as a Surgery Supervisor at Encino Hospital until she retired in 1988. Eileen also obtained certifications in Nursing Home Administration and Real Estate.
Eileen loved all sports especially tennis, golf and bowling. Showcasing her competitive spirit, she won a New Mexico State Bowling Championship. She also enjoyed square dancing, traveling, gardening, and most importantly, spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was an avid entertainer and hosted many elaborate parties at her Glendale, California home. Her years were filled with love and devotion to family and nursing. She will be missed, and her legacy as one of the “Greatest Generation” lives on.
She is survived by her four children, Gayle (John) Stephens of Roseville, CA, Douglas (Katrina) Grant of Northridge, CA, Dennis (Betsey) Grant of Northridge, CA, and Janet (Greg) Bailey of Moorpark, CA; ten grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren and many dear family members and friends.
Eileen was preceded in death by her sister, Jacqueline Adkins, her brother, Curtis Fesler, and her great-grandson, Jason Lutz.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
