Donald James Buhr

August 19, 1928 — August 22, 2024

Woodland Hills

Donald James Buhr, a cherished optometrist and beloved family man, was born on August 19, 1928, in Los Angeles to Edwin C. and Emma A. Buhr. He departed this world peacefully in his home in Woodland Hills, California, surrounded by the love of his family on August 22, 2024, at the age of 96. Don's life was a tapestry of devotion to family, a commitment to community, and a spirit enriched by faith and joy.

Having graduated the College of Optometry in 1951, Don dedicated his professional life to enhancing the vision of those around him, leaving behind an indelible mark on the field of optometry. His career was characterized by a steadfast dedication to his patients and a genuine passion for helping others see the world more clearly.  Don also served as an optometrist in the United States Army between 1952 and 1954, a testament to his work ethic and dedication to duty.

A man of remarkable character, Don was cheery and fun-loving, his heart anchored in strong faith. He was a founding member of St. Bernardine of Siena Catholic Church where he was an active parishioner for many decades and often attended daily mass. He embraced life with a zest that inspired all who were fortunate enough to know him. An avid sports enthusiast, he enjoyed staying active through tennis and golf, where his competitive spirit flourished and provided countless joyful memories with friends and family.

Don’s greatest joy came from his devoted wife and family. He married Eleanore Marlow on April 12, 1958, and had a long and caring marriage. They were always together sharing many interests including their deep and steadfast faith. He is also survived by his seven children, Vicki Cordes, Don Buhr Jr., Steve Buhr, Teresa Bernhoft, David Buhr, Pam Shuken, and Eric Buhr. Additionally, he is the proud grandfather of 17 grandchildren and one great-grandchild, all of whom he held dear to his heart.

He is also survived by his brother, Ken Buhr. Don is preceded in death by his brothers Edwin C. Buhr and Father Gene Buhr, and his grandson Derrick Schiller, who, along with countless others, will surely welcome him with open arms.

In grateful remembrance of Don's life and the joy he shared, friends and family are invited to gather to pray the Rosary at St. Bernardine of Siena Catholic Church in Woodland Hills on September 6, 2024, beginning at 10:45 AM. This will be followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:30 AM, and reception at 12:30 PM, as we celebrate a life well-lived.

May his love for Jesus continue to inspire us to live with compassion, grace, and faith, just as Don did throughout his remarkable life.
