Charles P. Overkleeft, affectionately known as Chuck, was born on December 1, 1928, in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He peacefully departed this world on October 1, 2024, in Simi Valley, California, after spending his final days in the comfort of home hospice.
Chuck was a man of many talents and passions. His career blossomed within the aerospace industry, where he applied his skills and dedication for many years. Later in life, he took the leap into entrepreneurship, starting several businesses before enjoying a well-deserved retirement. However, his commitment to service extended well beyond his professional endeavors.
A proud veteran, Chuck honorably served in the United States Navy for over 22 years, ultimately retiring at the rank of Chief Petty Officer. His military service was distinguished, earning him numerous ribbons and awards that reflected his unwavering dedication. Such service instilled in him a profound sense of duty, a trait he carried into civilian life.
Chuck held a special place in his heart for the military community, becoming a life member of the American Legion and actively participating in various veteran organizations. He generously devoted countless hours volunteering at VA hospitals, passionately supporting both active duty and retired military personnel. His efforts did not go unnoticed; he received numerous accolades, including several awards from the City of Simi Valley, recognizing his commitment to serving the community and organizing events such as Veterans' and Memorial Day services at the local cemetery. Additionally, he ran the American Legion's Boys State program, providing invaluable opportunities for local high school students.
Beyond his civic involvement, Chuck found joy in simpler pleasures. He loved camping and traveling, often regaling family and friends with tales from his adventures. He had a unique passion for chili cook-offs, showcasing his culinary prowess and enthusiasm for good food and fellowship.
Chuck is survived by his loving children, Sheri A. Overkleeft and Ed Overkleeft, and his dear sister, Helen Shemanski, who resides in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Their lives are forever enriched by his warmth, wisdom, and the indelible lessons he imparted. He is also survived by his daughter in law, Jan Brown, 4 Grandchildren, 9 Great-Grandchildren and 4 Great-Great Grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Doris A. Overkleeft, his son, Charles Phillip Overkleeft, Jr., and his son, Kenneth B. Brown. Each loss left a profound mark on Chuck's heart, and yet his memory of them continues to inspire his family.
A memorial service to honor Chuck's remarkable life will be held on November 1, 2024, starting at 4:45 PM at the Reardon Simi Valley Funeral Home, located at 2636 Sycamore Drive, Simi Valley, CA 93065. All who knew and loved him are invited to join in celebrating the incredible legacy he leaves behind.
Chuck Overkleeft's life was a testament to dedication, love, and service. He will be profoundly missed by all who were fortunate enough to know him, yet his spirit and lessons of honor will continue to guide his family and friends for years to come.
