Condolence: Though I only knew Tom for 7 short years it seems that I knew him much, much longer. Hearing his stories of growing up in Montana, teaching here in Simi Valley, or commenting on other matters of consequence he had a way of making me leave the conversation with a laugh or a smile. I met Tom at a time I was contemplating retirement as a public school teacher. He mentored me through the process and thus began a strong friendship. His kindness, generosity, and genuine caring for others will be truly missed. Thank you for the good times and laughs whether discussing politics, sports, or whatever. See you down the road one day (first Happy Hour is on me)...rest in peace my friend.

Condolence: I was so sad to hear of Mr. Layton’s passing. He will be missed by everyone whose life he touched and believe me, it is more than you can count! My son was blessed to have had him as a teacher in the 4th, 5th and 6th grade at Sycamore Elementary and I was honored to be his room mom during those years. Mr. Layton was a one-of-a-kind teacher and made learning a fun experience for all of his students, always encouraging them and making them feel special. He even took an interest in their outside activities and went to many of my son’s baseball games to cheer him on. He was a great mentor and taught my son many things including day-to-day life lessons. My son (now 32) kept in touch with Mr. Layton and had many long talks with him in the last couple of years while enjoying a beer and watching sports with him at the Junkyard or the Dugout. He always told him what a great teacher he was and what an impact he had on his life. Mr. Layton loved to hear that and would even get teary-eyed. As room mom, we did many special activities. One special hands-on project which took several months to complete was creating and painting a large scale map of the United States on the black top on the playground at Sycamore. The students had so much fun working on it and learned more than they would have just from a textbook. They were all so proud of it when it was finished. During one of my recent conversations with Mr. Layton, we were reminiscing about many things including the map and he expressed his thanks and appreciation (as he always did). He was very disappointed that the School District had paved over it.
Thank you, Mr. Layton, for being a part of our lives. You will always be remembered in our hearts!

He touched so many people's lives in so many ways ......I used to be a special Ed aide ........I always will remember him excepting me and my student at that time in his classroom., he especially had a place for Daniel Martin and I in his classroom at anytime I would want to come in and join his 6 th grade class. Condolence: Mr.Layton.
I had you for fifth grade at Sycamore Elementary. The day after I took the blame for an incident that you knew I did not do, you praised me in front of my classmates and in front of my bullies. You yourself said that what I did only a real friend would do. I put my classmates and bullies before myself. During elementary school I dealt with abuse in and out of school but I always had your respect. I am a better person, constantly improving and currently working on becoming a History teacher. You are my inspiration.
Love, Leticia.

Condolence: Mr. Layton.

You were the dearest most amazing teacher I ever had the pleasure of having. In all my years of school. I am now going to be 25 and have a little one of my own. You taught me lessons. Taught me to love myself. Taught me life lessons even at such a young age. I truly am going to miss you. I remember the last time I saw you was in the Junkyard restaurant. You remembered me. Farewell Mr. Layton. Forever missed.

Condolence: So many early memories with Mr. Layton. He taught all of my siblings and I. He came to my home to tutor me after I had surgery. I still have friends from his class. I remember memorizing spelling words and learning about history from his hand-typed lessons. Such a part of who I am today is what I learned back then.

Condolence: We are so sorry to hear of Mr. Layton's passing. He is the one teacher we both remember having and still talk about the science experiments he had us do and how he divided us up into teams for the different sports "seasons" for PE. We laugh about how he would tell every class that if they fought, they'd end up married like a couple of his previous students did. He is a legend to all the kids who had him for 6th grade. We are those kids. Our thoughts and prayers are with him and the family. God bless.
